Fraud…Will you be a Victim?

Speakers: Joni Tonnemacher, McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith; Gordon Guthrie, Wells Fargo Treasury Management; and Russ Sporer, County Risk Management Services, Inc.

This is a three-part informational seminar on fraud.  Part one will feature Gordon Guthrie (Wells Fargo Treasury Management) discussing fraud from a bankers’ point of view as to what he has seen, and how to prevent different types of fraud relating to banking.  Part two will feature Joni Tonnemacher (CPA and a Certified Forensic Financial Analyst with McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith) discussing statistics of fraud and outlining how to detect and prevent fraud at the county level.  Part three will feature Russ Spoorer (Partner, County Risk Management Services) discussing fraud from an insurance point of view and help determine if your county is covered; and if not, what steps to take to ensure that you become covered.  There will be time at the end for a Q and A with all three presenters.

Gordon works for Wells Fargo Treasury Management, and has the primary responsibility for providing treasury management expertise to the western half of the state of Iowa. He specializes in consulting with businesses on issues pertaining to cash management products and services. Gordon has 10 years of banking experience in the areas of retail and commercial banking. He lives in Waukee, IA with his wife and two children, and he is an active member of the Iowa Treasury Management Association. Gordon holds a BBA in Human Resource Management with a certification in Business Communication from the University of WisconsinEau Claire.

Joni graduated from Drake University in 1992, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.  She worked for the Federal Reserve System and in public accounting until 1996 when she joined McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith, P.C. CPA firm as an Audit Senior.  Since that time, Joni has gained extensive audit experience working with clients in various industries including real estate, trucking, nonprofit organizations and employee benefit plans.  Joni also provides peer review services and serves on the Peer Review Committee for the Iowa Society of CPAs.  In 2005, Joni participated in extensive training and subsequently passed a rigorous examination to obtain accreditation as a Certified Forensic Financial Analyst (CFFA).  Since that time, Joni has specialized in providing fraud detection and deterrence services to McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith, P.C. clients.  Joni enjoys assisting clients in developing and implementing effective internal controls in an effort to prevent, or at a minimum, quickly identify, the occurrence of fraud.  Joni was named a partner of McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith, P.C. in 2006.

Russ Sporer is a partner with County Risk Management Services and former owner and agent of NOEL Insurance, Inc., a prominent southern Iowa independent insurance agency with offices in Ottumwa and Osceola. County Risk Management Services is an endorsed provider of Iowa State Association of Counties and coordinates all marketing of Iowa Municipal Workers Compensation Association and Iowa Communities Assurance Pool to Iowa counties. Prior to joining County Risk Management Services Russ provided insurance consulting services to cities and counties throughout Iowa.Russ has a broad background in insurance industry affairs including Past President of Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa. He holds the professional designation of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter.
