Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was passed by Congress in 1996, presenting the single largest change in the health care business environment since the advent of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. The healthcare industry is being required to change its electronic payment-related transactions to one national standard. There will be one uniform set of codes across the country for each medical condition or procedure. All healthcare organizations that maintain or transmit electronic health information must comply.
